5G

Definition

5G is the fifth generation technology standard for broadband cellular networks, which cellular phone companies began deploying worldwide in 2019. It is the planned successor to the 4G networks which provide connectivity to most current cellphones.

Why It Matters

5G offers significantly higher speeds, lower latency, and greater capacity than 4G. This doesn't just mean faster downloads; it enables new applications like reliable AR/VR, connected cars, and massive-scale IoT that were not possible with previous generations of mobile technology.

Contextual Example

With 5G, a surgeon could potentially perform a remote surgery using a robot, as the ultra-low latency connection would provide instant, real-time feedback.

Common Misunderstandings

  • The full potential of 5G is not just about speed, but about its extremely low latency (delay).
  • The rollout of 5G networks is an ongoing process that will take many years to complete globally.
