Broadband
Definition
Broadband is a wide bandwidth data transmission with an ability to simultaneously transport multiple signals and traffic types. In the context of Internet access, broadband is used to mean any high-speed Internet access that is always on and faster than traditional dial-up access.
Why It Matters
Broadband internet access transformed the web from a text-based medium to a rich multimedia platform, enabling video streaming, online gaming, cloud computing, and everything we associate with the modern internet.
Contextual Example
DSL, cable, and fiber optic are all types of broadband internet connections. They provide the high-speed, always-on connection necessary for today's applications.
Common Misunderstandings
- The definition of "high-speed" has changed over time. The FCC currently defines broadband as a minimum of 25 Mbps download and 3 Mbps upload speed.
- It is contrasted with older "dial-up" internet, which was slow and required dialing a phone number to connect.
