Cloud

Definition

In the simplest terms, "the cloud" refers to servers that are accessed over the Internet, and the software and databases that run on those servers. Cloud servers are located in data centers all over the world.

Why It Matters

The cloud enables on-demand delivery of computing services—including servers, storage, databases, networking, software, and analytics—over the Internet ("the cloud") to offer faster innovation, flexible resources, and economies of scale.

Contextual Example

When you stream a movie on Netflix, you are using the cloud. The video file is stored on Netflix's servers and delivered to your device over the internet in real-time.

Common Misunderstandings

  • The cloud is not a single, mystical entity. It's a vast network of physical servers owned by companies like Amazon, Google, and Microsoft.
  • Data "in the cloud" is not floating in the air; it is stored on physical hard drives in secure data centers.
