Definition
Edge computing is a distributed computing paradigm that brings computation and data storage closer to the sources of data. This is done to improve response times and save bandwidth, rather than sending data to a centralized cloud for processing.
Why It Matters
As IoT devices generate massive amounts of data, it is not always feasible or efficient to send it all to the cloud. Edge computing allows for real-time processing directly on or near the device, which is critical for applications that require low latency, like self-driving cars or factory automation.
Contextual Example
A self-driving car needs to make split-second decisions based on data from its sensors. It uses a powerful onboard computer (an edge device) to process this data instantly, rather than sending it to the cloud and waiting for a response.
Common Misunderstandings
- Edge computing is not a replacement for cloud computing; they are complementary. The edge is used for real-time processing, while the cloud is used for large-scale data storage and analysis.
