Definition
High Dynamic Range (HDR) is a technology that improves the range of colors and contrast in an image. It allows for brighter whites, darker blacks, and a wider array of colors between them, creating a more realistic and vivid picture.
Why It Matters
HDR provides a more lifelike and immersive viewing experience. In games and movies, it brings out details in both the brightest and darkest parts of a scene that would be lost on a standard display.

Watching an HDR-compatible movie on an HDR-certified TV allows you to see the brilliant glint of the sun and the subtle details in deep shadows in the same scene, much like you would in real life.
Common Misunderstandings
- HDR is not about resolution. A 1080p display can be HDR, and a 4K display might not be.
- There are different HDR standards, such as HDR10, HDR10+, and Dolby Vision, which are not all compatible with each other.
