Integrity
Definition
Integrity is a component of the CIA Triad that involves maintaining the consistency, accuracy, and trustworthiness of data over its entire life cycle. Data must not be changed in transit, and steps must be taken to ensure that data cannot be altered by unauthorized people.
Why It Matters
Data integrity is critical for making reliable decisions. If the integrity of data is compromised, it can lead to incorrect conclusions, financial errors, and loss of trust.
Contextual Example
Using a cryptographic hash function (like SHA-256) on a file creates a unique digital fingerprint. If even a single bit of the file is changed, the hash will be different, allowing you to verify the file's integrity.
Common Misunderstandings
- Integrity is about preventing unauthorized modification of data.
- It is the "I" in the CIA Triad.
