Keylogger
Definition
Keystroke logging, often referred to as keylogging or keyboard capturing, is the action of recording (logging) the keys struck on a keyboard, typically covertly, so that the person using the keyboard is unaware that their actions are being monitored.
Why It Matters
Keyloggers are a powerful form of spyware used to steal credentials, credit card numbers, and other sensitive information typed by a user. They can be implemented as hardware devices or, more commonly, as malicious software.
Contextual Example
An attacker tricks a user into installing a software keylogger via a phishing email. The keylogger runs silently in the background, captures everything the user types, including their online banking password, and sends the data back to the attacker.
Common Misunderstandings
- Using a virtual keyboard or a password manager can help mitigate the risk of software keyloggers.
- Some keyloggers can also capture screenshots or clipboard content.
