Product Owner

Definition

The Product Owner is a role on a Scrum team responsible for defining the features of the product and managing the product backlog. The Product Owner is responsible for maximizing the value of the product resulting from the work of the Development Team.

Why It Matters

The Product Owner acts as the voice of the customer and stakeholders. They ensure that the development team is working on the most valuable features and that the product vision is clear.

Contextual Example

The Product Owner prioritizes the user stories in the product backlog, ensuring that the highest priority items are at the top. Before a sprint planning meeting, they refine these stories with the team to make sure everyone understands the requirements.

Common Misunderstandings

  • The Product Owner is one person, not a committee.
  • While they are the final authority on the product backlog, they must collaborate effectively with stakeholders and the development team.
