Resolution
Definition
Display resolution is the number of distinct pixels in each dimension that can be displayed. It is usually quoted as width × height, with the units in pixels: for example, "1920 × 1080".
Why It Matters
Higher resolution means more pixels, which results in sharper, more detailed images and more screen real estate for displaying content. This allows for more information to be visible at once and provides a more immersive experience.
Contextual Example
A Full HD monitor has a resolution of 1920x1080 pixels. A 4K Ultra HD monitor has a resolution of 3840x2160 pixels, which is four times the number of pixels of Full HD, resulting in a much crisper image.
Common Misunderstandings
- Common resolution names include HD (1280x720), Full HD (1920x1080), QHD/1440p (2560x1440), and 4K/UHD (3840x2160).
- Running a high resolution requires a powerful GPU, especially for gaming.
