LAN

Definition

A Local Area Network (LAN) is a computer network that interconnects computers within a limited area such as a residence, school, laboratory, university campus or office building.

Why It Matters

LANs allow devices in a close proximity to share resources like files, printers, and a common internet connection.

Contextual Example

Your home Wi-Fi network, with your laptop, phone, and smart TV all connected, is a LAN. They can all communicate with each other and share the same internet connection provided by your router.

Common Misunderstandings

  • A LAN is contrasted with a Wide Area Network (WAN), which spans a large geographical area (like the internet itself).
  • Ethernet and Wi-Fi are the two most common technologies used to build LANs.
