Definition
A Wide Area Network (WAN) is a telecommunications network that extends over a large geographic area. WANs are used to connect smaller networks, such as LANs or metro area networks.
Why It Matters
WANs are what connect different locations together. The most famous and largest WAN is the Internet itself.
Contextual Example
A large corporation uses a WAN to connect its office networks in New York, London, and Tokyo. This allows employees in all three locations to share data and access internal company resources.
