Output Device
Definition
An output device is any piece of computer hardware equipment which converts information from the computer into a human-perceptible form or into a physical machine-readable form for use with other non-computerized equipment.
Why It Matters
Output devices are how the computer communicates the results of its processing back to the user or to the physical world.
Contextual Example
The monitor (displaying images and text) and speakers (producing sound) are the most common output devices. Printers (producing physical copies) are another example.
Common Misunderstandings
- Output devices receive data FROM the computer.
- Some devices, like network cards, are both input and output devices as they send and receive data.
