Definition
A peripheral device, or simply peripheral, is an auxiliary device used to put information into and get information out of the computer. They are not part of the core computer architecture.
Why It Matters
Peripherals are what make a computer a useful tool. They allow us to interact with the computer and for the computer to interact with the world.
Contextual Example
Keyboards, mice, and webcams are input peripherals. Monitors, printers, and speakers are output peripherals. An external hard drive is a storage peripheral.
Common Misunderstandings
- Peripherals can be connected to the computer via various ports, such as USB, HDMI, or DisplayPort.
- Some devices can be both input and output, like a touchscreen display.
